At Musical U, we are constantly being inspired by the hard work and progress of our members and as our community grows, we like to take the opportunity to highlight some of our most inspiring members.
This month one of our most active and appreciated members WaterZone8 joins us on the blog to share her story and some of her biggest challenges and successes so far.
A Quick Introduction
Musical U: Hey, WaterZone8, thanks for taking the time to speak with us!
WaterZone8: Thanks for having me!
MU: Tell us a little bit about what you’re working on these days.
WZ8: My favourite genre of music is metal. I am trying to get my metal band off the ground (we’re struggling to find a committed drummer). My big goal is to work on my perception of whether a pitch is higher or lower. I can always sing the right pitch but I tend to confuse physical sensation with placement on a scale.
MU: Anything else interesting you’d like us to know about you?
WZ8: I love listening to music from as many countries as possible and in a variety of languages. Send any traditional and folk music my way at all times! :)
Growing with the Community
MU: It seems like lately, you’ve been making some great progress with Musical U. Before joining, where were you stuck?
WZ8: Before joining Musical U, I was trying to teach myself how to sight read. The process was very difficult and I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information and options available.
MU: How did you become interested in Musical U? Why did you decide to try it?
WZ8: I came across Musical U as I was looking for ways to help me reach my goals. Both time and money were limited for me and I really needed an option that would allow me to choose my own pace. When I read about the available modules and the forums, I decided to join, as I knew I could manage the information in a way that worked for me and I would be able to discuss music with a variety of people.
MU: What information has stood out during your journey?
WZ8: Interval recognition was an amazing process for me. Breaking the intervals down into small chunks of information and learning how to hear each one through repetition and just trusting that eventually my ear would learn what to look out for. That’s been a big deal for me.
Continued Progress
MU: What’s the benefit you’ve got from Musical U so far? Why is it important to you?
WZ8: Musical U helps me feel involved in multiple aspects of music. I can work on a variety of skills, simply share information or ideas on the forum, brainstorm with others, or learn from what is going on in their musical journeys by reading their progress journals.
MU: Has keeping a progress journal helped your musicality?
Keeping a progress journal has made me more aware that, even when I don’t meet my own deadlines, I am constantly learning. I’ve moved this year and have been really busy, so I’m not always where I want to be, but I can tell I’m making improvements.
MU: That’s awesome! It’s always encouraging to be able to see your growth firsthand. How have your plans changed along the way?
WZ8: My plans have become more fluid. I feel less of a rush to reach my final goal and more interested in taking my time to learn everything properly.
Thanks again for chatting with us, WaterZone8! It was a pleasure. We are exciting for the progress you’re making and the journey ahead.
